Pretty Little Lyres: Genuine Friendship in Tau Beta Sigma

On August 9th, 2018, I backed out of my Illinois driveway for the last time. I was just a bright-eyed 18 year old starting her new beginning at The University of Oklahoma. With tears in my eyes and a lunch box for the road, I reflected on the high school relationships that flourished, and the high school relationships that were… not so great. Doing so provided me with a clear image of the type of friendship and love I wanted when I arrived at OU, and I found it in Tau Beta Sigma. I think I finally found the clarity to compare and contrast what genuine friendship means to me, and what being a sister is truly about!

When I arrived at band camp a day later, I was greeted with some of the kindest people I have ever met. The drive to make each moment as magical as possible was contagious. I had never seen so many smiles before. In all honesty, I was taken aback by how many strangers said, “OH MY GOSH, YOU ARE FINALLY HERE”! It made me feel so welcome. I caught sight of many people wearing Tau Beta Sigma letters on their jerseys, and I was immediately interested. I asked myself: How can I be a part of this chaotic, wonderful atmosphere?

From that moment on, I went to as many rush events as I could! Canvas Corner was my favorite event of the semester. Everyone sat and laughed and painted the silliest things. It was SO relaxing! Additionally, we tie dyed really cute shirts and worked together when we ran out of coloring!

As I went to more rush events and began the rush process, I learned what it meant to be a true friend. And it starts with the little moments in life. Giving peers a ride to a rush event. Getting ready for First Degree with the girls. Going on a sisterhood retreat in the middle of nowhere and cuddling to stay warm. Staying up until 2 am in the library with your friends to keep each other motivated. Getting an iced coffee with your big even though it is currently 17 degrees in Oklahoma. All of these little moments made me forget about the silly high school drama that I thought would never come to an end. Well, I am so glad it did, because I got to start my new and genuine beginning with Tau Beta Sigma.
